The scarred back and dorsal fin of a Humpback Whale, taken off the coast of Queensland, Australia. This whale had just surfaced, and was diving, the arched back and dorsal fin sticking up out of the water. In this closeup view, the pattern of scars on the back and fin can be seen clearly. These scars help researchers to idenentify individual whales by their markings.
