Monarch butterflies, species Danaus plexippus, are famous for their spectacular en-masse migrations. Native to North America, they are probably the most commonly known and readily recognized butterflies in the region. Their beautiful pattern of bright orange with thin black lines and black, white-speckled edges makes them obviously distinguishable even from other Milkweed butterflies (Danaidae), many of which have similar markings in other colors.
These lovely monarchs were photographed in the Denver Butterfly Pavillion.
